SGMA Factory Members Help Clothe Yap Typhoon Victims

SGMA—Twenty-five of Saipan’s 27 garment factories that belong to the Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association (SGMA) responded to requests from the Governor’s, Lt. Governor’s and CNMI Legislature’s Offices and donated thousands of articles of clothing made in their factories for the residents of Yap who were devastated by Typhoon Sudal.

Delivery of the men’s, women’s and children’s apparel to CNMI Government Offices began two days after Typhoon Sudal, and cases were still being collected by the SGMA offices yesterday for delivery to coordinating offices at both the CNMI Government and the Red Cross-NMI Chapter.

“Actually, I think our first request for assistance for families that lost everything in the Yap storm came from a Yapese factory employee. He’d asked his Korean supervisor to help send something to them when he learned of their terrible losses. We received a call from Cathy at the Lt. Governor’s Office the next day to send whatever we could to help,” SGMA stated.

Factories have been asked to deliver goods to SGMA, the Office of the Governor and Lt. Governor, the CNMI Legislature and the Red Cross-NMI Chapter. Cash for water, formula milk and medicine is being sent, as well.
